How we conduct our On-Site Investigations
Before we begin our investigation we do a walk through of the property. During this walk through we determine where stationary equipment will be placed, taking baseline readings with EMF meters and temperature recording devices. We will later compare these baseline readings with collected data during the investigation. At this time we are also looking for any environmental factors that may be an answer for the activity. From draughts that can cause cold sports, to electrical problems, loose floorboards etc.
Why do these measurements matter and what do they have to do with finding or disproving paranormal activity? Lets begin with EMF (Electromagnetic Field) when electrical current travels through wiring or into an appliance, whether it is off or on it produces and electromagnetic field. We use an EMF meter to measure this field. What is considered a normal field? Most buildings generally have an ambient background reading of .5 to 2 milliGauss (mG). (MilliGauss it the unit of measurement for EMF.) From these measurements we can determine if the disturbance is man made or paranormal in nature. The theory is that paranormal activity may disrupt this field within a location or emit their own field.
So if you have a high EMF field on your property does that mean you have paranormal activity? No. There are many causes for these high field readings and our investigators will explain this fully to you in our evidence reveal session. Keep in mind that high EMF readings have been noted to stimulate a part of our brain, which may evoke a physiological reaction and even a sensory hallucination in some individuals. This type of reaction by individuals is called Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity. Again, if we find this to be the cause of your "paranormal activity" our investigators will explain this fully.
We now begin our data collection. Teams of investigators will be assigned areas that they will collect data from using the above-mentioned meters and also using still and video cameras. At this time they will begin EVP work, which stands for Electronic Voice Phenomenon. During these EVP sessions investigators will be using audio recording devices to record a series of questions and then wait for a reply. This reply is not heard at the time of the recording but upon playback. The theory behind this method is that spirits use the magnetic field on the recorders to imprint their voice and thus communicate to us through these devices. These communications are usually in short bursts and can be difficult to understand.
